The SINFONIA project was featured at the recent European Congress of Radiology 2024 (Vienna/AT, 28 February – 3 March 2024).
The open-access session on “Innovative tools for comprehensive risk assessment in radiology: insights from the SINFONIA Project” included four presentations by project partners:
- Chairperson’s introduction
To start with, the project’s Scientific Coordinator Prof. John Damilakis (University of Crete) gave a brief overview of the project. In particular, he emphasised the project’s goals.
- Innovative tools for the accurate estimation of organ doses from radiological examinations
Thereafter, Prof. John Damilakis presented the tools developed in the course of the project for the accurate estimation of organ doses. He introduced the iDose toolbox developed by SINFONIA. It offers three specific tools, namely iDoseDiag (Diagnostic X-ray imaging), iDose RTI (Radiotherapy imaging) and iDose AI (DL predictions). Prof. Damilakis gave a demonstration of the functionalities and usage of the tools.
- AI-based algorithms for dose optimisation in CT
Prof. Habib Zaidi (University of Geneva) presented their comprehensive work done on AI-based algorithms using deep learning. He summarised their recent results, which were already published in scientific journals, namely on deep learning-guided elimination of overscanning in CT (publication), deep learning-guided CT protocol optimization (publication), deep learning-guided patient positioning (publication), deep learning-guided voxel CT dosimetry (publication), and deep learning-guided internal dosimetry (publication).
- A novel software tool for risk appraisal
Prof. Christoph Hoeschen (Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg) talked about the software tool for risk appraisal, which is currently under development by the SINFONIA consortium. To start with, he gave an overview of basic concepts used to estimate risk in the context of medical exposure. He explained the BEIR VII risk model, which is used for the development. He also gave a quick demonstration of the tool to give a first insight into its functionalities.
The session concluded with a lively discussion with onsite and online attendees, which clearly showed the high relevance of the project and interest of the audience in the results available so far. In particular, the sustainability of the project’s results (tools/platforms) was discussed and the SINFONIA team is already working on different options to make sure tools are also available afterwards.
